[Discussion 2024] Changes to the Push Recovery Challenge

The following changes were proposed for the push recovery challenge at RoboCup 2024

Push recovery from any direction

The push recovery challenge should be from any direction, not just from the front or back.

Push recovery mechanism change

Change the push recovery challenge to be implemented with a force stick rather than a swinging bottle.
The swinging bottle approach has the issue that if the robot moves between trials, the bottle will no longer be aligned with the robot.
Also, a push recovery challenge where the robot is walking forward is not possible.

Force should instead be applied directly through a push with a force measuring stick.

Apparatus:

The apparatus should be a stick with a padded end that can be pushed against the robot, e.g., a boxing glove.
This device should be able to measure the peak force applied when the robot is pushed.

Possible Variants:

  • Pogo Stick
    • A pogo stick with a boxing glove on the end.
    • As the pogo stick depresses, it can push an indicator ring along a scale to show the peak force applied.
  • Grip strength tester
    • A grip strength tester can be modified to have the force of a stick with a padded end applied to it.
    • This would allow direct measurement of the peak force.
